BEDFORD, MA — After gaining approval from voters at the Nov. 3 Special Town Meeting, the town will submit a home-rule petition to implement ranked-choice voting in local elections. A home-rule petition is a formal request to the state Legislature for authority to enact a law or regulation that is not already granted by general state law.

Every vote counts

Scott Counsell read a statement on behalf of his wife Lorna Hyland, who said she is in favor of ranked-choice voting because “every vote counts” and “it helps politicians get a much more nuanced and complete picture of what their constituents actually want.”
